Pitt has landed its first commitment in the class of 2025, a defensive lineman at that, on the same day that Charlie Partridge left for the NFL.

Trevor Sommers — a 6-foot-3, 250-pound defensive lineman from St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — committed to Pitt Monday night following a visit to Pittsburgh for Junior Day.

He committed to Pitt over offers from Colorado, FIU, Illinois, Indiana, JMU, Syracuse, UAB, UCF, SF, West Virginia, Western Kentucky and Western Michigan.

“(The visit) went great,” Sommers told Pittsburgh Sports Now after the Junior Day experience. “Going up to Pitt, it was great weather, had a great experience and I’m excited to go back up in the near future.”

It was the second time that Sommers made it up to Pittsburgh, after receiving an offer last September, and it was a chance to dive more in-depth with the coaching staff — considering his first visit was for the Florida State game last season.

“We got to the facilities around 1:30, went up to coach Narduzzi’s office for like 20 minutes I’d say, just talking it up,” Sommer said. “After that, went downstairs for the photo shoot. So, after that went to the weight room, got measurements, ate lunch and went to the meeting room. We talked it up there, they all introduced themselves and then we went to the positional meetings.”

Sommers spent a lot of time with Partridge during the visit, and while Partridge obviously won’t be around to coach him, the coaching staff is a big fan of the way he’s able to play inside and outside on the defensive line.

“Just my motor,” Sommers said. “Play style, go out there and make plays and just development in the future.”

Sommers made an impact last season on one of the best high school football teams in the United States. He was a key cog in the defense, racking up 45 tackles (20 solo), 16 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, a forced fumble and a pass breakup.

Sommers has not been rated by the national recruiting services at this point, but that figures to change in the weeks and months ahead.

Sommers told PSN that his recruiting process had really wound down to Indiana and Pitt, but after a very good visit for Junior Day, he locked in with the Panthers as the first commitment in the class. It was the relationships he’s built that secured the commitment.

“The coaching staff,” Sommers said. “They’re all invested, they really want this program to succeed. It was great.”

With the recruiting process wrapped up, Sommers is ready to hone in on the offseason work on getting bigger, faster and stronger ahead of his senior season at St. Thomas Aquinas. And of course, he plans to make it back up to Pittsburgh.

Following the successful Junior Day, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Sommers is just the first of a couple of commitments that will come rolling in the days and weeks ahead.

I rarely pay attention until signing day. These commitments so often mean nothing until the papers are signed and sent in. These kids change their minds more than they change their underwear these days.
