Ahead of the 2023-24 season, PSN will be introducing every Pitt player and updating each player’s current situation on the roster. We continue our breakdowns with a freshman from Houston.
Jaland Lowe
Hometown: Missouri City, TX
Height, Weight: 6’3, 170 LBs
Position: Guard
Number: 15
Year: Freshman
Last year: Lowe was a four-star prospect out of Fort Bend Marshall High School in Texas. He scored 26.4 points per game, grabbed 8.1 rebounds per game, and dished out 4.3 assists on average. Marshall was 35-4 on the year and qualified for the 5A Region 3 Finals. Prior to his senior season, Lowe shined on the Nike EYBL circuit, averaging 18 points per game to earn First Team All-Peach Jam honors in the biggest event of the summer for rising seniors in high school.
The storyline: Lowe was one of Capel’s highest-rated commitments ever after cementing himself as an elite player in the Houston area.
Lowe is a crafty lefty guard who is a confident ball-handler, plays with his head up, and always seems to make the right decisions on the court. He shoots it well from outside and can set up his teammates with nifty passes all over the floor. Lowe has soft touch at the rim and my favorite part about is game is his patience and pace when driving into the lane. He uses leverage well to get defenders on his back hip, and from there, can pull-up, drive to the rack, or find a teammate inside or out.
Alongside Carlton Carrington (freshman) and Ishmael Leggett (junior), I expect Lowe to be on the floor often as a rookie in Pittsburgh. He will have a big role for the Panthers with a thin guard group this year, but seems to be ready for the challenge.
In his own words: “We knew coming in that we would have the opportunity to play on-ball and play right away as freshman,” Lowe said. “Me and Bub [Carrington], we stay in the gym. That’s all we do. Only these guys know as much, but nobody sees how much we’re in the gym. We watch film, we ask questions with the coaches. We’re just eager to learn because we know how big of a responsibility we have this year to pick up from where we left off last year. That’s all we want to do is exceed expectations. We already know what everybody’s saying about us, so we have the responsibility to put the work in and prove ourselves right and prove others wrong.”
can’t wait to see how this season goes … best wishes Jaland and all the Pitt men. H2P !
Can he handle the cold weather ?
