Since taking over as head coach, Jay Vidovich has taken the Pitt men’s soccer program to unprecedented heights and accomplished many program firsts.
Thanks to their 3-2 overtime win over No. 5 Virginia and a loss by top-ranked Wake Forest, Vidovich’s squad have accomplished another first and it’s a big one as the Pitt men’s soccer team was ranked No. 1 the country on Tuesday by the United Soccer Coaches poll, the first No. 1 ranking in program history.
The first comes after Pitt recorded their first home ACC Tournament last season under Vidovich. The Panthers then received their first NCAA tournament bid and victory later in 2019.
This is the first time a Pitt athletic team has been ranked No. 1 in the country since the men’s basketball team achieved it Feb. 23, 2009. The volleyball team came close last season when they were ranked as high as No. 2 in the country. The only other Pitt team to be ranked No. 1 at any point in its history is the football team, which topped the polls at points in the 1937, 1938, 1989, 1976, 1981 and 1982 seasons.
The newly ranked No. 1 team returns to action this Friday when they travel to Louisville. The Panthers are 4-0 and 3-0 in league play. Their nine points have them in first place in the ACC North Region, with Louisville tied with Virginia with four points for second place.
Pitt will wrap its regular season with home games at Ambrose Urbanic Field against Notre Dame on Oct. 30 and Syracuse on Nov. 6.
