Jeff Capel has been added to the newly formed John McLendon Minority Leadership Initiative.
Capel, along with 34 other college coaches, will work with this foundation in order to help provide minorities an outlet to start their athletic careers through practical experiences, opportunities to build their networks, and instilling the values of John McLendon: Integrity, Education, Leadership, and Mentorship.
“I am grateful to have the opportunity to partner with peers in the coaching industry to support the McLendon Minority Leadership initiative,” said Capel. “I was fortunate to learn about Coach McLendon through his relationship with my dad. He was a pioneer of the game and an extremely important figure in the integration of college basketball. To help carry on his legacy by developing a pathway for minority men and women into athletics administration is a terrific tribute to him. This program will not only increase diversity in athletic departments, but will provide many more people of color clear opportunities to pursue their dreams.”
The ultimate goal of the McLendon Foundation is to assist in the solicitation of collegiate coaches, administrators, and their corporations to build this program and provide chances in athletic departments across all athletics, with the ultimate goal of helping minorities that are interested in starting a career in athletic administration.
