A former Pitt walk-on wide receiver landed at an FCS school, earning a scholarship, giving him the opportunity to continue playing football at the Division I level.
Lorenzo Jenkins committed to Bethune-Cookman, a private historically Black university in Daytona Beach, Fla. announcing his decision last Saturday in a post on Twitter.
Jenkins, who stands at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, spent two seasons at Pitt. He redshirted in 2022 and did not play in any games last season.
He played for nearby Blackhawk High School in Beaver County, Pa. where he made 72 catches for 702 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior in 2021, which set a new school record and a county record as well. He received Class 4A PAFootballnews.com Coaches Select All-State Second Team and WPIAL All-Parkway Conference honors for his play that season.
Jenkins chose to leave Pitt in late November, with an inability to pay for school going forward. Now, he has a scholarship to play FCS football, allowing him to see the field and to continue playing the sport he loves. He has three years left of collegiate eligibility remaining.
He was one of eight other walk-on wide receivers at Pitt in 2023, joining redshirt senior Josh Junko, redshirt sophomore Peter Vardzel, redshirt first-year Caden Smith and first-years in Devin Whitlock, Thaddeus Shaw and Benny Haselrig.
