Former Pitt Defensive Back Signs With Youngstown State

Former Pitt defensive back Stephon Hall.

Stephon Hall entered the transfer portal in November, and nearly two months later, he’s found a new home.

Hall — a former Pitt safety — committed and signed with Youngstown State, choosing the Penguins over Utah State, Toledo, Buffalo, Western Michigan, Delaware, North Texas, Miami (Oh.), Arkansas State and UConn.

It’s a landing spot that isn’t too far from home for the Monaca, Pa. native, and he’ll have the opportunity for an increased workload with the Penguins — which wasn’t going to happen in Pittsburgh.

Hall was a three-star recruit out of Central Valley in 2021, enrolling mid-year for his freshman season, and he earned praise from the coaching staff all throughout his three seasons at Pitt. But he didn’t see the field much over the last few seasons either.

Hall played in 18 games over the last two seasons after redshirting in 2021, but he mainly saw the field as a special teamer. He received 64 snaps in 2023, seeing defensive action in six games and recording seven tackles (two solo).

With Javon McIntyre, Donovan McMillon and P.J. O’Brien Jr. firmly entrenched in the depth chart, and a true freshman like Cruce Brookins earning more snaps as the season wore on, the writing was on the wall for Hall.

Pitt has not added a safety from the transfer portal, with the lone defensive back arriving in the former of Nebraska cornerback Tamon Lynum, but there’s still a lot of offseason left.

How about an update on Alabama de-commit Jaime Ffrench and PITT’s odds of not getting him.
