Pitt volleyball alum Serena Gray has earned a spot on the U.S. National Team for the 2023 Pan Am Cup the federation announced on Saturday.
Gray starred at Pitt the past two seasons, leading them to back-to-back Final Four appearances. She finished her career with 515 kills in 248 sets played, 2.08 kills per set, 69 service aces, 263 total blocks, and a phenomenal .407 hitting percentage.
She originally started at Penn State, but transferred to Pitt for the 2021 season. In her first season with the team, she led the team with 132.0 total blocks and finished fourth on the team 267 kills, receiving First-Team All-ACC, AVCA East Coast All-Region Team and AVCA All-American Honorable Mention honors for her efforts
Gray continued to excel in her final season with Pitt volleyball in 2022. Â She finished third in the ACC with a .406 hitting percentage in 2022 and eighth in the conference with an average of 1.10 blocks per set. Gray was also one of four players from 2021-22 to hit over .400 and was also the only player last season to make 130 kills on a hitting percentage over .400 in ACC play. She earned AVCA All-American First-Team honors in her final season with Pitt.
The 2023 Pan-Am Cup takes place from Aug. 6-13 in Ponte Puerto Rico. Gray is one of 14 players on the roster and is the only player to come from an ACC school.
The U.S. swept Costa Rica on Sunday, and will play Peru on Monday at 4 p.m., Colombia on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Canada on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Group play. Friday is the quarterfinals, Saturday is the semifinals and then the gold and bronze medal matches are next Sunday.
