Pittsburgh Sports Now/ ACC Daily Transfer Portal Recap

With the conclusion of the ACC regular season in college football, the opening of the NCAA Transfer Portal is coming soon.

Starting on Dec. 4, college coaches will have the opportunity to speak with players that have entered their name in the portal. This will serve as a stressful period for college teams and a wild couple of months for the sport of college football.

This is the new form of recruiting and is now crucial to every team, almost as much as high school recruiting itself. Pittsburgh Sports Now will start running an ACC Daily Portal Report, that will provide updates on all activity involving programs in the ACC.

ACC PORTAL NEWS / November 28

Clemson

Redshirt junior quarterback Hunter Helms will leave Clemson and go into the transfer portal. Helms played sparingly over his four seasons with the Tigers, just nine games, which he completed nine of his 12 passes for 83 yards.

Linebacker Corey Flagg Jr. and running back Don Chaney Jr. announced on Tuesday that they are leaving the program and entering the transfer portal.

Flagg played in 43 games for the Hurricanes, starting 23. He made a career 179 tackles, 93 solo, 24.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one interception and two passes defended.

Chaney had 94 carries for 478 yards and two touchdowns in 2023. Over his four seasons at Miami, he rushed 175 times for 852 yards and six touchdowns in 25 games.

Flagg has one year left of eligibility, while Chaney has two.

North Carolina

North Carolina running back Elijah Green announced his decision to enter the transfer portal today. Green stands at 5-f0ot-11 and 215 pounds and played in five games for UNC in 2023, with four carries for 12 yards.

His most productive season came in 2022, as he started the final five games and played in all 14. He had 131 carries for 558 yards and eight touchdowns, with his longest rush at 80 yards. He also made 17 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown, with his longest catch at 22 yards.

Green will arrive at his new time as a redshirt senior and have two years of eligibility remaining, with the COVID-19 year if he so chooses.

NC State

Cornerback Nate Evans and wide receiver Porter Rooks announced their intent to transfer from NC State, doing so on Tuesday. Evans didn’t play at all in 2023 and played in three games in 2022, which included two defensive snaps and one special teams snap. He has two years left of eligibility.

Rooks caught 79 passes for 891 yards and a touchdown in 49 games with the Wolfpack. He had 13 catches for 166 yards in 2023. Rooks has one year left of eligibility.

Stanford

Running back E.J. Smith announced his decision to transfer Tuesday night, leaving the Cardinal after four seasons. He played in 24 games, accrued 109 carries for 555 yards and five touchdowns. He has one year left of eligibility, thanks to the COVID-19 year.

Wake Forest

Two Quarterbacks Transfer

Two quarterbacks from Wake Forest announced their intent to transfer on Tuesday, in redshirt sophomores Mitch Griffis and Santino Marucci.

Griffis replaced former ACC-great Sam Hartman who transferred to Notre Dame, and struggled throughout 2023. He completed 124 of his 207 passes, 59.9%, 1,553 yards and nine touchdowns to seven interceptions, and finished with a 3-5 record as starter.

Marucci started one game against Pitt, leading Wake Forest to a late 21-17 win, completing 12 of his 21 passes for 151 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

Both quarterbacks have two years left of eligibility each, with the COVID-19 year if they so choose.

Redshirt junior Michael Kern started four games in 2023, including the final three, leaving him as the readiest quarterback for 2024.

Long snapper Jacob Zuhr also placed his name in the portal Tuesday morning. Zuhr started his first two seasons at long snapper with Wake Forest, nine games in 2020 and all 14 games in 2021. He only played in three games in 2022 and recorded just 19 snaps, while not participating at all in 2023.

He’ll have two years left of eligibility, as he redshirted this season and will have a COVID-19 year if he chooses.

Defensive back Brendon Harris is the fourth player to announce their transfer on Tuesday. Harris played in two games this season and will have one more year of eligibility, his seventh in college football.

He played in 12 games in 2022, making 20 tackles, 13 solo, with an interception and a pass deflection. He spent 2018-21 with Vanderbilt, making appearances in 34 games and accruing 127 tackles, 82 solo, 2.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble and seven passes defended.

Justice Ellison became the fifth Demon Deacon to place his name in the transfer portal on Tuesday.

Ellison had 120 carries for 548 rushing yards and one touchdown in 2023, serving as a back-up behind sophomore running back Demond Clairbone.

His best season came in 2022, as he rushed 170 times for 707 yards and six touchdowns. He earned Third Team All-ACC honors for his efforts last season. He has one year left of eligibility, as he is using his COVD-19 year.
