Update (9:40 p.m.)-
Pitt women’s basketball continued their poor run of form in February as they lost to Florida State Thursday night, 76-60, at the Petersen Events Center
The Panthers (7-17 overall, 1-10 ACC) lose their fourth straight game with their defeat to the Seminoles (17-7 overall, 8-5 ACC), as they lost to the then ranked No. 14 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sunday, the Duke Blue Devils on Feb. 1 and the then ranked No. 18 Louisville Cardinals on Jan. 28.
This also drops the Panthers to 0-11 all-time against the Seminoles since joining the ACC prior to the 2013-14 season. It also makes it eight straight home losses in ACC play dating back to last season.
Florida State opened up the game with an 11-2 run through the first six minutes of the game. Graduate guard Alexis Tucker led the way with two 3-pointers, while Pitt couldn’t get anything to go.
The Panthers would score some points towards the end of the period, but still found themselves down 17-8.
The Seminoles scored seven points right out of the second quarter, with first-year guard Carla Viegas making a 3-pointer and a layup, leading to a timeout from Panthers head coach Tory Verdi.
Pitt would matchup with Florida State, 7-7, but the road team would dominate the last three minutes of the first half. They used a 7-2 run that forced another timeout from Verdi and would build their lead to 22 points, 42-19 at the halftime.
The Panthers shot 9-for-36, 25%, from the field and 0-for-10 from behind the arc in the first half. Junior guard Bella Perkins shot 0-for-6 from the field and 0-for-4 from 3-point range for 0 points in the first half.
While the game looked like it was for sure a Florida State win, Pitt came out of halftime the much better team, with an 8-3 run that forced head coach Brooke Wycoff to take a timeout.
Pitt would extend that run to 15-3 to cut the lead to 11 with 5:34 remaining, but Florida State scored five points to get the lead back to 14. Pitt then went on a 9-0 run, with a 3-pointer and a layup form sophomore guard Aislin Malcolm and a layup and mid-range jumper from senior forward Liatu King to cut the lead to five points with 2:46 remaining, forcing another Florid State timeout.
The Seminoles established control in the game, using a 10-3 run to end the third quarter with a 12-point advantage at 60-48. Sophomore guard Ta’Niya Latson led the Seminoles with six points, including a buzzer-beating layup, while junior forward Makayla Timpson added four points herself.
Pitt would not come close the rest of the way, as Florida State increased their lead to 16 points at 68-52 with 6:22 remaining, with Verdi calling a timeout. FSU held on for the 16-point victory in the end.
King led the Panthers with 21 points and 15 rebounds, her 14th double-double of the season. Graduate student forward Jala Jordan scored 14 points, while Malcolm added 12 herself.
First-year guard Aaryn Battle scored seven points off the bench, shooting 3-for-5 from the field. Pitt had a +9 point differential whenever she was in the game.
Pitt will host No. 3 NC State on Sunday at noon, looking to pull off a massive upset.
