Nearly a year ago, Class of 2025 wide receiver David Rodriguez dropped his top five — a list that included Maryland, Michigan, Georgia, Penn State and South Carolina. Absent from that list was his first Power Five offer: Pitt. Since that initial drop, however, he has re-opened his recruiting.

Rodriguez announced on Tuesday that he will be visiting Pitt on March 22 after the Panthers re-offered him on Feb. 2.

Formerly of Mt. Pleasant High in Rhode Island, Rodriguez has transferred to St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Md. for his final season of high school football.

Rodriguez has quickly formed a relationship with two of Pitt’s recent coaching hires in running backs coach Lindsey Lamar and wide receiver coach JJ Laster.

“Coach Lamar and Laster have been showing a lot of interest in me,” Rodriguez told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “They’ve been texting me every other day and showing me I’m prioritized. That’s something I’m really big on: going somewhere I’m needed.”

As the 6-foot receiver gets set to visit Pittsburgh, he looks forward to connecting with coach Laster in person, he says.

Just like many high school wide receivers showing interest in Pitt, Rodriguez emphasized how Pitt legacies have impacted him and his interest in the program.

“It means a lot seeing all the greats before me. Why can’t I be the next Biletnikoff Award winner to come out of Pitt? Jordan Addison’s size is similar to mine, so I got to put in the work and hopefully I’ll get there,” he said.

As a three-star prospect according to Rivals.com, Rodriguez owns a skill set and personality that he feels can benefit any program.

“I’m fast, strong hands, but best of all, I’m coachable,” he said. “Everybody can all play at the next level, so paying attention to the small details is something I’m really big on.

Along with the aforementioned top five schools and Pitt, Rodriguez holds offers from Florida, Auburn, West Virginia, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Boston College, among others.

“A lot of coaches have been moving around so I opened up my recruitment,” he said.

In addition to Pitt, Rodriguez has visits lined up with Virginia on March 23, USC on April 20 and USF during the summer on June 21.

Has Pitt offered Scoop Smith yet? I think it’d be a major mistake for Pitt to let a top local talent go.
