Thursday’s Best ESPN BET Bets: Pirates-Nationals, Penguins-Capitals, Indiana St-Seton Hall

After finally breaking through with a 3-0 day on Tuesday, we came back down to earth Wednesday night with a 1-2 showing. Our only win of the night was the Nationals as they gave the Pirates their first loss of the season. The Thunder were no match for the Celtics as they were blown out in Boston. The Oilers could not help us on the over as they were shut out by the Stars. We moved to 231-180-3 on the year.

With the Bills dealing Stefon Diggs to the Texans, it has shaken up the NFL odds a bit for next year. Some are thinking this is going to make the Bills worse while it evaluates the Texans to a potential Super Bowl contender. To some extent, I don’t think either of those scenarios will be the case.

I do believe the Texans will at least win the AFC South and make a run in the playoffs. But with Patrick Mahomes still leading the charge in the AFC and Joe Burrow now healthy, Houston will have to show they can beat those teams before taking the next step. Though I do believe CJ Stroud can have the Texans playing in the first Super Bowl within the next 5 years, it just won’t be next year.

As for the Bills, yes they lose their best receiver, but they also get rid of their biggest headache. Diggs is a guy you have to force feed the ball to early to get him interested in the game. He’s a lot like Antonio Brown except Diggs is a tier 2 wideout and couldn’t hold AB’s jockstrap when it comes to talent. I believe this move in the long run will help the Bills out as long as they double dip at receiver early in this year’s draft. Don’t write off Buffalo just yet for their Super Bowl window.

Pittsburgh Pirates (-120) at Washington Nationals O/U 8.5 4:05 PM on SportsNet Pittsburgh

Before the Pirates return home for the first time this season, they will finish up in DC in the rubber match against the Nationals. Martin Perez will get his second start of the season after looking solid in his team debut in Miami. He will oppose Nats righty Josiah Gray.

For the first time this season, the Bucs not only didn’t win but the over didn’t cover either. Maybe the over only covers when they are underdogs? I am going to take a chance and pick the over today. Perez and Gray should get rough up by these offenses today.

Pittsburgh Penguins (-115) at Washington Capitals O/U 5.5 7:00 PM on SportsNet Pittsburgh

A double dose of Pittsburgh/Washington in DC today as the Penguins and Capitals will face off tonight in what has now become a very pivotal game for both teams. As of last week, the Pens only had under a 1% chance to make the playoffs. Now they are only 3 points back of this Capitals team for the final Wild Card spot.
When these teams met in early March, the Penguins were flat after just learning the news of the Jake Guentzel trade to Carolina. I believe they will look a lot better than they did that night and get another win to pull them within 1 point of the final playoff spot in the East.

Indiana St Sycamores (-2.5) at Seton Hall Pirates O/U 159.5 NIT Finals 7:00 PM on ESPN

Is this the biggest NIT Final in the last 25 years? That is what it feels like to a lot of college basketball fans as Indiana St faces Seton Hall at the Hinkle Fieldhouse to determine the winner of the NIT Tournament. Usually when teams that are snubbed for the NCAA Tournament, they go into a shell and lose early in the NIT. Neither of these teams got that memo and have been rolling in this tournament.

So, who has the edge tonight? I love the Indiana St story and the fact that they can win the NIT in their home state. But to be honest, my head and heart are with Seton Hall. I believe they were a bigger snub than the Sycamores. Shaheen Holloway is building something with the Pirates. A win tonight is just another building block in what could become one of the top Big East programs over the next few years.
