2020 3-star offensive tackle Alex Atcavage is a player that the Pitt football staff have had their eyes for a while and are now showing renewed interest in him with the turmoil in Tallahassee.
Atcavage (6’5″, 285), who played at IMG Academy in Florida is one of the many 2020 Florida State commitments that are keeping their options open following the firing of head coach Willie Taggart. Earlier this week, Pittsburgh Sports Now caught up with Atcavage to find out more about his future plans and if they could include Pitt?

“I’m still committed to Florida State but we’re completely 100% open to other schools,” Atcavage told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “In fact, Miami has reached out to me and we’re going to make an official there then Coach Narduzzi reached out to me also. So, I’m interested in all schools that reach out to me now and I’m 100% open to schools now.”

Atcavage has enrolled at a new school, Honesdale High School, which is located in Northeastern, Pennsylvania and 25 minutes from Scranton, Pennsylvania. As you would imagine, Pitt isn’t the only other program that’s attempting to lure this talented lineman to their program.
“Indiana is the big one,” said Atcavage. “They’ve actually been interested and continued to show interest in me since I committed to Florida State. They were actually my first Power Five offer and they’ve been on me for a long time now. Miami, Purdue, Kentucky and Michigan State are other schools that are showing interest in me as well.”
“As far as Pitt goes, Coach Salem is someone I’ve had a relationship with for a while because he’s been my area recruiter. Pitt was actually the first Division One school to show interest in me. Coach Salem reached out to me this week and said ‘We are now looking at U now’. The way he texts, he acts like he’s a teenager (laughing) and capitalized U when he said ‘we are looking at U now’. I told him thank you very much for the interest and I really appreciate it. I told him that I hope to be out for a visit soon and he said let’s talk soon. Following that, Coach Narduzzi followed me on Twitter and he said let’s get on the phone soon. I told him that my family and I would love to visit soon.”
Atcavage tells me that as of now, he has plans to make official visits to Miami, Indiana and Maryland, which means he has one opening left to take. He’s hoping to make an official visit to Pitt separate from any big official weekend that Pitt might try and play with other players. He’s just waiting to hear from the Pitt coaches to see if something can be worked out and if so, on a specific date that he and his family can travel to Pittsburgh.
“Because I have local schools, I’m trying to look to go closer to home (Honesdale, Pennsylvania) if I don’t end up going to Florida State. So when Pitt entered the picture, they instantly went higher up on my list just because of how close they are to home. So that’s what we’re looking at.”
As far as his future position in college, Atcavage tells me that college programs love his versatility as he has played and has the capability of playing either tackle or guard position in college.
