The 2021 WPIAL boys’ basketball quarterfinals are officially over, and we’re onto the semifinals with only four teams remain in each classification.
Class-1A – Two lower seeds advanced to the semis in this bracket. No. 5 Union beat No. 4 Imani Christian by 11 points. And No. 6 Leechburg in a close one beat No. 3 Eden Christian. The semifinals in Single-A are:
No. 1 Bishop Canevin vs. No. 5 Union at Bishop Canevin
No. 2 Rochester vs. No. 6 Leechburg at Rochester
Both games to be played on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. on March 9.
Class-2A – In the quarterfinal round, Jeannette exploded offensively with 83 points. All higher seeds advanced but a few teams gave them a run such as Sewickley Academy and Fort Cherry. Semifinal’s schedule:
No. 1 OLSH vs. No. 5 Jeannette at OLSH
No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic vs. No. 3 Sto-Rox at Sto-Rox
Both games are to be played on Wednesday, March 10 at 6 p.m.
Class-3A – A huge upset happened on Monday as No. 11 Ellwood City scored 81 points over No. 3 Shady Side. No. 1 South Allegheny handled No. 9 Seton LaSalle. Aliquippa got by Laurel, and Neshannock beat Beaver Falls but both were single digit games. Semifinal’s schedule:
No. 1 South Allegheny vs. No. 4 Aliquippa at South Allegheny
No. 2 Neshannock vs. No. 11 Ellwood City at Neshannock
Both games to be played on Thursday, March 11 at 6 p.m.
Class-4A – Three of the high seeds advanced as Belle Vernon, Lincoln Park and Montour — the top three seeds — will play in the final four. No. 5 North Catholic went on a scoring spree as they beat No. 4 Quaker Valley 84-56. Semifinal’s schedule:
No. 1 Belle Vernon vs. No. 5 North Catholic at Belle Vernon
No. 2 Lincoln Park vs. No. 3 Montour at Lincoln Park
Both games are to be played on Thursday, March 11 at 6 p.m.
Class-5A – Every top seed advanced as some big names are still in the running like Chartiers Valley, New Castle and Laurel Highlands. New Castle will try to win their fourth championship in five years, and Mars will look to win their third in four years. Semifinal’s schedule:
No. 1 Chartiers Valley vs. No. 5 Mars at Chartiers Valley
No. 2 New Castle vs. No. 3 Laurel Highlands at New Castle
Both games are played Wednesday, March 10 at 6 p.m.
Class-6A – Finally in the highest classification, the top two seeds, Upper St. Clair and Fox Chapel advanced. But No. 6 Pine-Richland beat No. 3 Hempfield, and No. 5 Butler edged out No. 4 Penn-Trafford. Semifinals are to be played Tuesday night:
No. 1 Upper St. Clair vs. No. 5 Butler at Upper St. Clair
No. 2 Fox Chapel vs. No. 6 Pine-Richland at Fox Chapel
Both games are playing Tuesday, March 9 at 6 p.m.
