Jim Boeheim Alleges Pitt ‘Bought a Team’ in College Hoops Rant to ESPN

Published

on

In an interview with ESPN National Analyst Pete Thamel that was released on Saturday, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim alleged that Pitt ‘bought a team,’  when talking about the current state of college basketball.

“This is an awful place we’re in in college basketball,” Boeheim told ESPN. “Pittsburgh bought a team. OK, fine. My [big donor] talks about it, but he doesn’t give anyone any money. Nothing. Not one guy. Our guys make like $20,000. Wake Forest bought a team. Miami bought a team. … It’s like, ‘Really, this is where we are?’ That’s really where we are, and it’s only going to get worse.”

Since his statement went viral, Boeheim reportedly told ESPN that he “absolutely misspoke” about Wake Forest and Pitt buying teams.

Shortly after the interview was released, Wake Forest head coach Steve Forbes told ESPN that Boeheim’s allegations are “one thousand percent wrong.”

Since Boeheim’s comments went viral online on Saturday night, the Syracuse head coach has reportedly spoken with Forbes and “walked back” his initial statement.

This offseason, Pitt added former Colgate point guard Nelly Cummings, former Ole Miss/Iowa State wing Blake Hinson, and former Marquette wing Greg Elliott out of the transfer portal. Pitt also added freshmen Guillermo and Jorge Diaz-Graham, as well as Dior Johnson and JuCo big man Federiko Federiko.

Jeff Capel has not commented on Boeheim’s accusations.

Brandin Knight fired back nicely. Mr. Knight reminded us all of past sins at Syracuse. Mr. Knight says he knows “who got paid” before it was legal. Another fine assist from Brandin Knight.

Heck even if he did, he isn’t paying nearly as much as most schools are. Unfortunately paying is the entrance fee. Power 5 schools aren’t Bucknell, they need some funds to entice players. With that said you won’t see Pitt with 6 digit NIL deals anytime soon.

If you don’t get your NIL game strong then pitt will continue to be a jv program in hoops and football. shi*t let Addison walk over peanuts.

Pitt has a lot of guys that nobody wanted. The biggest recruit that Pitt had last year was Judah mintz and somehow Syracuse got him to decomit from Pitt and go to Syracuse. If Pitt was paying players big time money, Judah mintz would be playing for Pitt and not Syracuse.

He can have Mintz. The kid is a dirty player. He gave Carolina’s point guard a black at the end of a game that was already decided. Jim Boehiem hasn’t been above board. Remember what Barry Fine had done up there on coach Boehiem’s watch.

in fairness to mintz … i believe he decommitted before the off-season moves were made and probably did so because of how badly Pitt was playing last season. Also, from the outside, it probably appeared that we wouldn’t be much better this year. After season end, Capel made his moves and got some great players that are playing well together. H2P !

I find it hard to believe that he pointed a finger at Pitt, and he wants you to believe ANYONE would want to go to Syracuse WITHOUT getting paid. No details. We know who got paid and if he is such an angel, name names and help clean the game up.

Jamie Dixon accused Louisville of illegal activity and was slammed because Pitt didn’t do it. Now Capel used the portal and NIL and Boeheim is aghast. Sounds like a morally deficient old man from another era. Understand that man threw the college president off his lawn because he understood a request was coming to retire. Maybe it’s Jimmy’s time.

I hope Broheim doesnt retire anytime soon. Sports needs more people to hate -it makes it more satisfying when you kick their butts.

The only comment that is necessary here is Brandon Knight’s. What a perfect rebuttal.

If BK named a few names then yeah perfect. Why hold that back? Boheim called Pitt cheaters the gloves are off.

I see this string became more infighting among the bloggers than sports opinion. Obviously this team was assembled with money-whatever you call it- NIL or something else. Pitt is a tough place to recruit. The coaching staff deserves credit in choosing the right combination of guys to play together. Up until now Capel has had trouble doing that. I’ll give a lot of recruiting credit to Asst. Coach O’Toole whether he deserves it or not.

Please no extension for Capel! Let’s get Knight to PITT before he is taken.

Both of my sons went to Syracuse, and yes, I did see a black Hummer driven by a famous Basketball star while visiting up there. These things are not secrets.
