Since the end of last season, Frank Cignetti and Jonathan DiBiaso have been scouring the country evaluating high school quarterback prospects.
And when I say the country, that’s no exaggeration, as Pitt has offered quarterbacks from all over the country, including states such as California, Mississippi, Tennessee, Missouri, Texas and Alabama.

Speaking of Alabama, the Panthers hosted a quarterback on Thursday from Oxford, Alabama that received an early offer from Pitt.
Mason Mims is a sophomore from Oxford High School and made the long trip to take in his first visit to Pittsburgh. Mims (6’3″, 185-pound) was able to watch Pitt’s third spring practice and received a tour of the facilities.
Before heading back home, Pittsburgh Sports Now caught up with Mims and got his first impressions of Pat Narduzzi’s program and the interaction he had with the coaching staff.
“I made the trip to Pitt because they were the first school that offered me and believed in me,” said Mims. “It meant a lot to me that they’re interested in me as a player. I wanted to go visit and distance is not a concern to me. There’s a lot that stood out to me, but if I had to say one thing it would be the vibe. The culture there is impressive. Coaches, players and everyone in the building seem to have the same goals. The Pitt facilities were amazing. Being in the same building with the Steelers, obviously everything is first class.”

“In talking with the coaches, they laid everything out with how they do things and what is important to them in their program. Coach Cig said something early on that stuck with me. He was saying that it has to be a fit academically, socially and then relationship wise. That stuck with me because Coach D has been great. And meeting Coach Cig was great. He was really open with what he wants and easy to talk to. I think the offense they run fits what I do well. Pitt’s facilities, their culture and the system went beyond what I expected. I’ll be back up in June for a camp and plan to get up for a few home games.”
Mims not only excels in football, but he’s also a standout high school baseball player.
