Many reasons are given when talking about the resurgence of recruiting for the Pitt football program.
Things such as winning twenty games over the last two seasons, the rise in the number of players getting drafted, the ACC Championship and Kenny Pickett are reasons most often mentioned.
Maybe the most important aspect and something that’s taken for granted a bit is the quality of assistant coaches that head coach Pat Narduzzi has assembled. In my opinion, from top to bottom, this current group is the best group since Narduzzi took over at Pitt.
Credit must be given to athletic director Heather Lyke and the Pitt administration for being able to keep this group of coaches together. Although it isn’t reported on because most times this type of information doesn’t leak, plenty of other programs have tried and failed to poach coaches from Narduzzi. Reason it’s been unsuccessful is Pitt’s administration’s willingness to step up with raises, along with Narduzzi trying as hard as possible to take care of his staff financially.
When talking about this Pitt football staff, the names brought up the most are defensive line coach Charlie Partridge and wide receivers coach Tiquan Underwood. In the eyes of the fan base, they’re the headliners. And while they’re very good at their jobs, so are a lot of other Panther assistants.
In my eyes, secondary coach Archie Collins and safeties coach Cory Sanders are future coordinators if not future head coaches. Offensive line coach Dave Borbely and tight ends coach Tim Salem are just steady veterans of this staff, while linebackers coach Ryan Manalac is someone that appears to be on the rise in the coaching ranks. Don’t forget about the job that Karlo Zovko does as Pitt’s assistant Director of Player Personnel. In terms of behind the scenes recruiting, he’s as important as it gets.
Our Pittsburgh Sports Now Poll Question today is, who do you believe is Pitt’s most underrated assistant coach?
