Saturday’s Best ESPN BET Bets: Rangers-Penguins, St. Bonaventure-Duquesne, Iowa St-Houston

Published

on

After an imperfect Thursday, we rebounded on Friday with the Winning Picks going 2-1. St. John’s ran out of steam versus UConn but still managed to cover the spread. As with Pitt, who went toe-to-toe with perennial National Championship contender North Carolina, falling in the end but covering with the hook. The Hawks could not overcome the Jazz on the road, should’ve gone with the over instead. We moved to 202-152-3 on the year.

We have so many games today including conference championship games that will have Pitt fans sweating as they could result in automatic bid stealing. One of those is NC State/North Carolina. Kevin Keatts Wolfpack team has gone on a run as it was reported he would be fired at the end of the season. For now, his job is safe getting to the ACC Tournament. I like the Wolfpack to cover tonight but I don’t see them overcoming the Tar Heels.

Another matchup that Pitt fans should have eyeballs on is Oregon/Colorado in the last PAC 12 title game for the foreseeable future. The Buffaloes are likely already in the tournament win or loss, but the Ducks would be a bid stealer. Oregon toppled mighty Arizona in the semifinals last night, a team I think is extremely overrated with zero toughness. Fear not Pitt fans, Colorado gets it done and wins versus Oregon.

Now onto the Winning Picks!

New York Rangers (-140) at Pittsburgh Penguins O/U 5.5 3:00 PM on ABC

Hopefully Penguin fans have had their green beer at the parade before they file into PPG Paints Arena for this afternoon’s clash with the New York Rangers. The Metro leading Rangers will be without their new enforcer Matt Rempe as he was suspended for 4 games after he delivered a vicious elbow to Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler. Sidney Crosby has to be happy not to face this goon, though he probably wishes the Penguins had a goon like this to protect him.

The only real success the Pens have had this month is against bottom feeding teams like Columbus and San Jose. Any other team with somewhat of a pulse has taken the Penguins to the woodshed. I like the Rangers to beat the Pens today, though I believe it will be a little more competitive than some of their previous matchups this month.

St. Bonaventure Bonnies vs Duquesne Dukes (-1.5) O/U 134.5 3:30 PM on CBS Sports Network

Clap it up for Keith Dambrot. After a few years of roster turnover, the former Akron coach has gotten the Dukes in position to potentially reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1977. That was a team that featured future NBA Champion Norm Nixon, who was featured in the show Winning Time about the rise of the Showtime Lakers. But first, they need to get past St. Bonaventure today.
Duquesne was able to sweep the regular season series versus the Bonnies this year. The Dukes have won their last 3 matchups against them overall. It makes me proud to see Duquesne in this spot, as they never made it this far in the A-10 Tournament when I attended school there. This is the furthest they have gone since reaching the finals in 2009. I believe they make it back to the A-10 finals today, as they win and cover in a close game with the Bonnies.

Iowa St Cyclones vs Houston Cougars (-5.5) O/U 121.5 Big 12 Championship 6:00 PM on ESPN

We have a heavyweight in the Big 12 Championship tonight as Iowa St and Houston clash in Kansas City. Both teams have rolled through their first 2 games in the tournament and they split their regular season matchups. Something has to give tonight!

I believe Houston is poised to make a run at a National Championship. Kelvin Sampson is one of the best coaches in Division 1 to never win a Natty, let alone make a championship game. That runs starts today, as the Cougars lock up a #1 seed and cover against the Cyclones tonight.
