The North Carolina basketball program helped former O.L.S.H. star Cam Johnson become a 1st round NBA pick and his younger brother is hoping it does the same for him.
Tonight, former Moon 4-star forward Donovan Johnson announced that he was committing to play for Roy Williams and the Tar Heels. This decision comes two days after Johnson’s official visit to Chapel Hill.
North Carolina’s Class of 2020 now consists of three 5-star players (Walker Kessler, Day’Ron Sharpe and Caleb Love) and two 4-star players (Johnson and R.J. Davis).
Johnson (6’7”, 185) is rated by 247 Sports as the #48 overall player in the Class of 2020.
After transferring to Arizona for his senior season and with Cam playing for the Phoenix Suns, some thought it was a slam dunk the younger Johnson would join Sean Miller and Arizona. In the end, the storied history of the North Carolina program and impact that Roy Williams had in two years on Cam led him to North Carolina.
Although he said the right things about the local team, Johnson never seriously considered committing to Pitt. Despite Jeff Capel trying hard, the damage done when Cam left Pitt was something Capel was never going to overcome.
Johnson joins Butler 4-star guard Ethan Morton as two 4-star WPIAL players that choose to leave Western Pennsylvania.
Stalling must be smiling. Even after he’s gone, he still negatively impacts the program.
