Pitt Moves 2019 Delaware Game, Potentially Setting up ACC Opener

PITTSBURGH — Pitt has re-scheduled its 2019 home football game against Delaware, which was originally scheduled for Aug. 31 at Heinz Field.

Instead, the Panthers will host the Blue Hens on Sept. 28, 2019, freeing Pitt to play a higher-profile game for the opening week of the season.

The beginning of the 2019 football season will coincide with the beginning of the ACC Network, and the conference appears to be keen to get things started with a bang. The 2019-20 men’s basketball season is going to start with conference games, and it appears that’s the route that football is taking, as well.

“We had to move some games in anticipation of the ACC Network,” athletic director Heather Lyke said. “We have one more contract to get in and then we’ll be able to reveal several years’ worth of non-conference scheduling.”

Pitt will also play Boston College, Central Florida and Ohio in 2019 as well as their usual Coastal Division opponents and permanent crossover opponent Syracuse. Pitt’s 2020 schedule will include games at Florida State and Marshall and home dates with Miami (Ohio), Notre Dame and Richmond.

Pitt’s 2021 schedule has three remaining open dates. The Panthers will host Clemson in their Atlantic Division crossover and visit Tennessee as part of a two-year home-and-home. Pitt will host West Virginia for the Panthers’ first game of the 2022 season in the renewal of the Backyard Brawl. That series is currently slated to run from 2022 to 2025.
