Carrington is the first Pitt player to wear the No. 7 jersey since George McGrossin did it in the 1948-49 season, 74 years ago. The NCAA announced a new rule that will allow players to wear any number from 0-99. The original rule stipulated that players could not wear the numbers No. 6, No. 7, No. 8 and No. 9.
Most of it has to do with referees and the scorers’ table having miscommunication on foul calls, but the NBA has done away with the rule, without much disruption.
Kante will wear No. 4, with former Pitt forward John Hugley IV wearing the number last season, before transferring to Oklahoma this offseason.
Leggett, who transferred from Rhode Island, will wear the No. 5 jersey. Former forward Nate Santos wore the number the past two seasons, before transferring to Dayton this offseason.
Barnes will have No. 11 for next season, continuing a line of great players to wear the jersey number for the Panthers. Guard Jamarius Burton had it the last two seasons, forward Justin Champagne had it the two seasons before that and both Carl Krauser and Gilbert Brown both wore its points during their time with Pitt.
Lowe, who made it onto the Jordan Brand Classic 2023 roster, will wear the No. 15 jersey next season. Forward Mouhamadou Gueye wore it last during the 2021-22 season and Kene Chukwuka last wore it under head coach Jeff Capel from 2017-20. Sam Clancy also famously wore the number from 1977-81.
Austin will wear the No. 55 jersey, after transferring in from High Point. He is the seventh player in Pitt history to wear the number and the first since Jonathan Milligan did from 2015-17.
The Panthers also announced that a new player has joined the team as a walk on: Benjamin Mayhew, a 6-foot-4 forward out of Braddock Hills (PA).
