Pitt Hosting National Runner-Up in 2025

Pitt hasn’t had much success against Notre Dame in recent appearances, but the Panthers will have the opportunity to bounce back against the national runner-up at home this season.
The ACC announced the full Pitt football schedule on Monday night, and while the conference slate dominated the headlines, the final unannounced non-conference game on this schedule was also revealed — Notre Dame.
Pitt opens the season with Duquesne, Central Michigan and West Virginia back-to-back-to-back, but the Fighting Irish will arrive in town in the midst of conference play. Pitt and Notre Dame will kick off at Acrisure Stadium on Nov. 15.
It’s the first time that the Panthers and Fighting Irish have played in Pittsburgh since a 45-3 throttling in the COVID-19 season.
Pitt is 21-49 all-time against Notre Dame, including a 58-7 demolition in the most recent matchup, but when it comes to the Fighting Irish, it’s not about the past. It’s about the present. Still, the series dates back to an inaugural Notre Dame victory at the Pitt Stadium in 1930.
Notre Dame is coming off a 14-2 campaign under head coach Marcus Freeman, advancing to the College Football Playoff championship game. The Fighting Irish knocked off Indiana, Georgia and Penn State before falling to Ohio State, 34-23, in the title game. There are some major pieces to be replaced, but it’s likely that the Irish return to success.
Quarterback Riley Leonard has exhausted his eligibility, and defensive coordinator Al Golden departed for the NFL. And there were additional losses, either to the NFL, graduation or the transfer portal, across the lineup.
Pitt vs. Notre Dame is just one of a few key matchups in the non-conference slate this season. Pitt and Duquesne are playing in the first City Game in 86 years, and Pitt and West Virginia are playing in the 108th Backyard Brawl.
