Pitt On The Verge Of Dancing

Published

It’s a good thing the Pitt basketball team didn’t listen to fans,  media and guys like me.   Many thought this team was on the verge of collapsing, but today they proved many people wrong.

Pitt’s 3 best players showed up in a big way and they recorded an impressive road win over Syracuse.  If you did your research this result shouldn’t surprise you considering Jamie Dixon is now 7-2 all-time at the Carrier Dome.

The Panthers “Big 3” were big with James Robinson recording 13 points and 5 assists, Jamel Artis 21 points and 11 rebounds and Michael Young collecting 11 rebounds. Dixon also got solid production from 3 members of his bench: Sheldon Jeter 7 points, Ryan Luther 6 points and 5 rebounds, and Cam Johnson contributing 6 points.

Those numbers were fine but no doubt the numbers that had to make Dixon and his staff happy were the FG% and rebound totals.   Pitt held Syracuse to 37% shooting and outrebounded them 45-26.   That’s old Pitt basketball.

With the win, Pitt is now 6-6 vs. Top 100 RPI teams and 1 win from the magical win #20 (19-7).   The last 4 games are at home vs.  Louisville and Duke then closing out the schedule with road games at Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech.

How many wins does Pitt need to assure themselves a spot in March Madness?  With wins now over Syracuse (twice), at Florida St and at Notre Dame, (in my opinion) a win over Louisville or Duke gets them in.  If they lose the next 2 games, they’d probably want to beat both Va Tech and Georgia Tech to be sure of a spot.
